The Director of News & Public Affairs will supervise KMUWs news reporting staff and oversee their daily news gathering efforts to provide enterprising, timely, high quality news and feature coverage. This position supervises news-gathering activity, determines priorities, makes assignments and approves concepts for long-form pieces, features, series and spot news. This position will serve as primary editor and as needed on-air host or reporter. This position is responsible for skill development, performance progress and evaluation of news staff members. The Director of News and Public Affairs will collaborate with the Director of Content to ensure broadcast news content meets KMUW audio quality and editorial standards. This position will oversee digital news content best practices and initiatives. This position reports to the Director of Radio/GM. Minimum Education Bachelors degree in communication, journalism or related field. Minimum Experience Ten years successful experience in supervising news reporting staff and providing work direction Proven successful experience assigning stories, features and managing breaking news coverage to meet ascertained community needs Successful experience guiding a team of reporters while maintaining high journalistic standards including objectivity, balance and fairness, under deadline pressure Five years successful experience in using or overseeing social media or other digital platforms as news-gathering and/or reporting tools Knowledge, skills and abilities Excellent spoken and written English skills, with an intelligible speaking voice A passion for story telling with excellent, creative copy-writing skills appropriate for public radio news reports Knowledge of public radio news reporting standards and reporting treatments for broadcast and digital platforms Commitment and ability to utilize digital platforms, style and best practices for content delivery Strong communication skills and passion for building relationships internally and externally to help further the mission of KMUW news Knowledge of journalism principles, techniques, editorial and ethical standards for the research, development and production of journalistic content Dedication to expanding KMUWs local news coverage with enterprising: creative features, relevant spot news and investigative reporting to address community, regional and state issues Awareness, understanding of, and the ability to implement the core values of public radio Must be able to successfully meet production and broadcast deadlines, with the flexibility and ability to respond to changing priorities Excellent people management and project management experience Required Licenses, Certificates & Registrations Valid Drivers License for Travel Wichita State University does not discriminate in its employment practices, educational programs or activities on the basis of age, ancestry, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, marital status, national origin, political affiliation, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or status as a veteran.
