SUMMARY Builds and repairs machine shop tools. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Studies specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders, and shop data and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost. Applies algebraic and geometric formulas and standard tool engineering data to develop tool configuration. Selects standard items, such as bushings and tool bits, to incorporate into tool design. Modifies tool designs according to trial or production service data to improve tool life or performance. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned as required or needed • Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts • Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations • Measures, marks and scribes metal stock for machining • Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications • Lifts machined parts and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable • Smoothes flat and contoured surfaces and power grinders, and fits and assembles parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms • Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances • Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part • Develops specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draws or sketches design of product • Promotes and utilizes standard safety practices QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent, Vo-tech certification in machining or related field preferred. 4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. LANGUAGE SKILLS Must be able to effectively communicate questions and concerns to departmental management. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Shop math, tool design and configuration, algebra and geometry. REASONING ABILITY Logical. Maintain a professional work atmosphere by being courteous, respectful and non-interfering with customers, co-workers, and management. Requires excellent use of both hands and arms; good hand-eye coordination; lift at least 50 pounds; repetitive motion with hands/arms; utilize various hand tools. The environmental temperature has extreme fluctuations based on outdoor temperature; however, fans are provided for air circulation. Moderate noise level; fumes and oils from cleaning chemicals, dry lube, and general maintenance.
