Job-Seeker Polishes Skillset and Gains Two New Positions Within Months

Kathy came to the Wichita Workforce Center in the Spring of 2023 to complete employer assessments for positions with Sedgwick County. She had most recently worked providing patient care for a family member and worked as a Hospitality Aide at the local hospital for 12-16 hours per week over the course of two years. During that time, her computer skills had waned, so she hoped to make use of the workshops at the Workforce Center (WFC). Kathy met with Jill, a Workforce Professional (WP) to update her KansasWorks account and receive a resume review. WP worked with Kathy over several appointments to assist her in attaching her resume to online applications and create a cover letter for any positions that required one. WP signed Kathy up for several of the computer workshops and Kathy also attended a Digital Skills Lab to practice working in Microsoft Word and Outlook before completing employer assessments. After completing the required workshops, Kathy received a new laptop from OKEP (Older Kansan’s Employment Program).

After applying with a local school district, Kathy received an offer for a Para position beginning in mid-August. She knew the job wouldn’t be quite enough hours and wanted to be available for work on the weekends and during the summer, so she applied for some Dining Services Assistant and Server positions at multiple assisted living places. In late June she was hired as a Food Server at an assisted-living center working 25 hours per week, earning $12.50 an hour. She also started as a Paraeducator at a school on the same street as the assisted living center in mid-August working 35 hours a week, earning $13.50 per hour.
