Seasoned Employee Gains New Career Despite Age Barrier

Goober came to the center after receiving a notice to complete his MRP (My Reemployment Plan), a process that is required when receiving unemployment benefits. He lost his job as an OTR (Over The Road) Truck Driver in December of 2022. Nearing age 50, Goober was concerned that his job opportunities had decreased and was encouraged to sell potential employers on his work history and knowledge. After questioning how Goober applied for positions, the WP created his first resume. Guidance was provided on overcoming obstacles, including his age, during the application and interview process. WP strived to keep Goober optimistic and give positive answers in regard to his previous employers.

Many companies are seeking dependable individuals with a strong work ethic; Goober had solid experience and excellent attendance to use as references. A local employer that recognized the advantage of hiring a “seasoned” employee offered Goober a full-time position as a Truck Maintenance Worker, starting at $19.00 per hour. He began his employment on May 30, 2023. The WP received an in-person update, as he came back to the Workforce Center happily share his news. With many older candidates struggling to get hired, this was a wonderful example of an employer realizing the benefits of experience, dependability, and determination.
